Before we start this review, you have to know one thing.
As far as robotic vacuum cleaners go, that’s unheard of. It’s the cheapest one we’re reviewing on our site because, to put it simply, we literally could not find a cheaper one anywhere – not even used ones on Craigslist.
Now for a mere, you’re not going to get a state-of-the-art machine. You’re going to get a barebones unit that will do some things, but not others.
Below, we’ll review everything that the M285D has on it. We’ll also go over what the unit is best used for, and finally, we’ll give you some “expectations” to have for your unit so that you’re not disappointed. Let’s get started – if this one appeals to you, you might be able to save hundreds of dollars.
M285D Features + How It Cleans Your Home
Obviously, the M285D isn’t trying to draw you in with its technology. It’s a “pretty good”, simple unit. Simplicity always bad – the price is so low because it only does the basics.
Other robotic vacuum cleaners will have a bunch of different brushes and pads doing the work. The M285D just has two simple brushes on the front of the machine. They’re made from electrostatic paper… not the best material, but then again, they’re good enough to dislodge minor amounts of dirt and other debris.
The vacuum itself has a surprising amount of suction – our best guess is Robo Maxx skimped on the brushes to be able to provide more suction on the machine. You won’t have any trouble picking up debris with this vacuum… as long as that debris isn’t coated into the floor or anything like that.
The dirt bin is bagless, which is nice. However, reviewers say that the unit itself isn’t so big, and because of that, the dirt bin isn’t so big, either. This is a downside and an upside… it’s bad because you have to clean it somewhat frequently, but it’s good because the unit will be able to fit under anything that’s in your house. It’s nimble.
Keep in mind that the M285D will beep loudly when the bin needs to be changed. This beeping makes it easier on you, because you don’t have to constantly check in on it – you can just wait for the beep. Just make sure to place the M285D back where you picked it up, or else it’ll get confused.
It doesn’t last very long on a single charge – just an hour or so. Again, you can’t expect the best battery. The M285D will return to the charging station when it’s close to dead, though, so this isn’t really an issue.
Finally, you can schedule the unit to run every 24 hours… but there is no scheduling customization aside from that. This is great if you’re out of the house at a certain time every single day – getting coffee, buying dinner, working out, etc.
That’s basically it. Let’s recap.
- The Robo Maxx M285D creates a rough map of your house and begins cleaning
- Two plastic brushes on the front stir up loose dirt
- A surprisingly powerful vacuum vacuums up all of the dirt into the bin
- The unit continues to clean until the job is done – if the bin is full, it beeps, and if it runs out of battery, it goes back to the docking station to charge itself
No fancy bells or whistles – just a machine that gets the job done.
Best uses for the Robo Maxx M285D
If you have five kids, three dogs, and four cats constantly messing up your house, then we’ll be honest with you – the M285D probably won’t cut it. If you have an exceptionally dirty house, you’ll need an exceptionally powerful vacuum. We’ve reviewed quite a few on our site – you can select from one of those.
However, if you’re just looking for general maintenance, then the M285D is all you need.
We recommend using it primarily as a duster. If you let the M285D run by itself for a year, your house won’t look great by the end of that year.
But you can use it to minimize the amount of time that you have to clean yourself. It can keep things tidy. If you currently clean your house every week, using the M285D can probably reduce that amount of cleaning down to once or twice a month at the maximum.
Expectations for the M285D
Think of your M285D as one of your kids. If you tasked your kid with cleaning the floors of a room, what would you do to make it easier for him or her?
- You’d probably pick up everything off of the floor so that your kid doesn’t get confused on what or where to clean
- You’d probably clearly tell your kid where to clean
- You’d probably not expect too much out of him or her – after all, he’s trying his best, but he’s just a kid
Do the same things for your M285D as you’d do for your kids.
- Pick up all loose objects and wires – the last thing you want is for the unit to get stuck on something and stop cleaning
- Don’t task your M285D with cleaning your entire house right away – put it in one room and close the door to see how it does first
- Don’t expect too much
Ready to take the plunge? Don’t worry too much about liking it or not – if you get it and realize that you need more, you can just return it to Amazon and select a different one.
