This is the best automatic vacuum on the market… and we don’t make statements like that lightly.

The Roomba 880 cleans the best and requires the least maintenance. It’s that simple. Don’t get us wrong – other Roombas are pretty darn good – but for those looking for the cream of the crop, look no further.

“Virtually Maintenance Free”

The point of a robotic vacuum cleaner is to remove the chore from your life. Sure, vacuuming manually isn’t the end of the world, but if you can afford it, why not have a robot clean for you?

The problem with most robot cleaners is that they have a lot of headaches associated with them. Hiccups here and there will require manual intervention, and then cleaning the bin and filter after every use will take another 5 to 10 minutes.

This manual work isn’t the end of the world either, but the whole point of getting a robot is to reduce the amount of work you have to do. Let’s say that a normal vacuum job takes you 30 minutes… how long is your subpar robotic cleaner taking you? It’s doing all of the vacuuming itself, but between managing hiccups and cleaning it, you might spend 10 to 15 minutes on each run. Good… but not great.

The Roomba 880 is great. It’s dubbed to be “virtually maintenance free” by Roomba itself because of how flawlessly it runs and how easy it is to clean. Multiple reviewers claim that it takes under two minutes to clean, and on top of that, it only has to be cleaned every couple of runs or so.

How it achieves the perfect clean

The last thing you want from your vacuum is a mediocre clean. A mediocre clean is when the floors look good for the most part… but when you really inspect them, there’s still a bit of dirt and grime left over.

The Roomba 880 doesn’t leave that unnecessary dirt and grime behind. Here’s how it doesn’t do that.

1 – The 3-step cleaning process

Step 1: The Roomba 880 selects an area to clean. It first removes all debris from against any walls or furniture legs without hitting them.

Step 2: Then, it takes all of that debris (plus all of the other debris in the area) and moves it into a neat pile.

Step 3: Using AeroForce Performance Cleaning System and AeroForce Extractors, the Roomba 880 inhales all of the debris in one fell swoop, leaving behind no trace of dust or dirt.

2 – Dirt Detect Series 2

Roombas have always had Dirt Detect, but Series 2 brings it to a whole new level. The unit scans the floor for any sign of anything that’s not floor (namely dirt) and calculates how many passovers will be needed to clean it all up.

This ensures that no part of your floor is left dirty, and it also conserves battery because the unit doesn’t waste time on areas that are already clean.

3 – Multiple passes

Unless you manually stop the Roomba 880, it’ll go over each room in your house a couple of times. This further ensures that it’s spotless. (Truly spotless, not just “pretty good”.)

Other features you need to know about

The remote

Let’s say you start watching TV with your family, and the Roomba makes an entrance to clean the living room. It’s relatively quiet, but still – you probably don’t want it disturbing you.

All you do is grab the remote and tell it to shoo. You can direct it to clean another room, or you can tell it to return to the docking station.

The scheduling option

You’re free to manually run your Roomba every time you want your house clean, but the scheduling feature allows your house to always be clean.

You set up a weekly schedule for the Roomba, and it’ll automatically turn itself on and start cleaning at that time. This is great if you have scheduled commitments – you can have it run during that commitment, and when you come home, your house will be clean, fresh, and healthy.

iRobot XLife batteries

These are the newest batteries from iRobot. They last for twice as long as the old batteries. This means that you pay less in the long run to keep your Roomba 880 running.

iAdapt Responsive Navigation Technology

Your Roomba will automatically map out your house when you run it for the first time. But the really cool thing is how it adapts to changes.

Let’s say you have the 880 scheduled to run twice a week. Between the times it runs, you might do slight modifications to your house. The 880 will adapt to these changes without batting an eye.

It’ll adapt in between cleans, too. So if you’re doing a comprehensive clean where you’re moving furniture around, you don’t have to worry about the 880 slamming into anything and causing damage.

iRobot Roomba 880 Summary

Look… if you’re someone who likes to get the best of the best, then the 880 is for you. It’s not the cheapest – actually, it’s one of iRobot’s most expensive offerings. But it’s expensive for a good reason – there’s no maintenance, it truly cleans your entire house down to the last dust particle, and it has a slew of features that lesser models can’t come close to matching.
